AgriVETourism – Building Sustainable Futures through Agritourism and Education
AgriVETourism is a European Erasmus+ initiative dedicated to fostering sustainable rural development by uniting agriculture with tourism in innovative and environmentally responsible ways. Rooted in the traditions of local communities yet oriented toward the future, the project seeks to empower rural adults and agritourism operators with the skills and knowledge necessary to create resilient businesses that protect natural resources while supporting local economies.
The project, officially titled Enhancing Sustainable Agritourism through Vocational Education and Training for Rural Development (Project Reference: 2024-2-BG01-KA210-VET-000267044), runs for a duration of 18 months and is implemented under the Erasmus+ Programme, Key Action 2 – Partnerships for Cooperation and Exchange of Practices. Coordinated by the Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) in Bulgaria, AgriVETourism brings together partners from Bulgaria, Italy, and Greece, establishing a transnational platform for collaboration, innovation, and shared learning.
At its core, AgriVETourism responds to the pressing needs of rural communities by offering targeted vocational education and training (VET). These educational pathways combine eco-friendly farming methods with essential hospitality and tourism management skills, ensuring that participants can design and operate agritourism ventures that are both economically viable and environmentally sustainable. Beyond technical training, the project also encourages creativity, entrepreneurial thinking, and respect for cultural heritage—elements that together enhance the attractiveness of rural destinations and promote long-term prosperity.
The initiative is funded under the Erasmus+ KA210-VET action, which supports small-scale partnerships in vocational education and training. This specific action is designed to enable smaller organisations, community actors, and local authorities to take part in international cooperation. It provides the flexibility to address real-world challenges, pilot innovative solutions, and develop practical tools that meet the needs of learners and practitioners alike. Through KA210-VET, AgriVETourism becomes more than just a project; it is a collaborative effort to blend local expertise with European best practices, ensuring that sustainable agritourism becomes a driver of inclusive growth across participating regions.
By investing in people, strengthening local economies, and safeguarding natural and cultural assets, AgriVETourism contributes to a broader European vision of sustainable rural development. It illustrates how education, when aligned with community needs and environmental responsibility, can transform challenges into opportunities and help rural areas thrive in an increasingly interconnected and eco-conscious world.
